Blogging

Welcome to Hanover & Pearl

Hanover & Pearl

Oh hey, y’all. As you can see, M is for Melissa got a little makeover, in the form of a new name and an updated layout. I needed a little blogging refresh, and I was just never in love with or proud of the old name. I felt that it was slightly juvenile and not open-ended enough for where I want to take this blog. I picked this name for a few reasons: a) because I like the way it sounds, b) because it leaves the purpose open ended, c) because I was able to reconcile all social media handles (no body has time to remember which handles had an underscore and which didn’t!) and d) because it means a lot to me. They were the first cross streets I lived on when I moved to the crazy city I call home.

Although beauty will always be my bread & butter, I’m looking forward to expanding a little more into lifestyle, as I love to cook, and I think I would enjoy writing about life in the Big Apple. More imporantly, I hope it helps me interact with more readers and more bloggers from around the world.

If you have any questions, feel free to tweet me @HanoverAndPearl or email me at hanoverandpearl@gmail.com.

Stay Tuned…For the New Domain!

M is for Melissa is getting a face lift & a new name! I’ve never been in love with this particular name, so this entire website is moving to Hanover & Pearl! I’ll have more background on why I made the switch and what the name means to me once I’ve flipped everything over. Don’t worry, you don’t have to do anything at all; it will just be an automatic updated, but I wanted to let everyone know. x

The Blogger Tag: 11 Quick Q&As

M is for Melissa

I always enjoy getting to know other bloggers through these little tag posts, so I wanted to do one myself! I was tagged by the lovely Alejandra at Exquisite Glow to do this tag, and rather than answering in paragraphs, I decided to speed answer them – one or two sentences, off the top of my head, for each question. Here we go:

1) Why did you start blogging?

Because I was bored out of my mind at my finance job, and I needed a creative outlet. Now that I have a new, creative job in the fashion industry, I blog solely because it makes me happy, and I enjoy interacting with other bloggers!

2) Who is your idol?

Anna Wintour, hands down. She’s a power house.

3) If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

This is tough – you could uproot me and put me down anywhere, and I think I would be happy. London is pretty far up my list of places to live, as is Hong Kong or Shanghai.

4) What is your signature scent?

I feel like you don’t qualify for a “signature scent” unless you’re, like, Kate Moss.

5) What is your favorite makeup brand?

This is a tough one – I think it might be NARS. I don’t think I’ve ever purchased a product from NARS that I haven’t loved. Plus it is hard to beat their super chic packaging!

6) Would you choose high street or high end fashion?

High end, of course, if I had a bottomless bank account. The beautiful quality and craftsmanship is absolutely worth it to me.

7) What is your favorite song?

This changes all the time for me! Some of my most often listened to songs on Spotify over the last two weeks are Beyonce’s Partition, The Black Keyes’ Gold on the Ceiling, Baby Baby Baby by Make the Girl Dance, and La Grange by ZZ Top – quite the variety there, isn’t it? Ha.

8) What’s your favorite album?

Whole album? Geez, I’m not sure if I ever listen to an entire album anymore. I think the last album that I have enjoyed beginning to end was Maroon 5’s Hands All Over.

9) Facebook, Twitter or Instagram?

None? Ha. Probably Instagram, I guess. I only ever use Facebook to see people’s photos anyway, and Instagram is just that! I actually don’t use a personal Twitter, but I find it a great communication tool for the blog.

10) Who is your celebrity style icon?

Blake Lively, Kate Middleton, Emma Watson

11) What is your favorite holiday?

Christmas, of course! My family’s house always smells like cinnamon, which is the best. Plus, we have so many fun traditions, and we make up more as we go ha.

I tag all of you! I personally invite anyone who reads this to answer these 11 questions on your blog. Ready, set, go!

The Liebster Award

The Liebster Award
It’s been a while since I did a tag post, and recently, the lovely Emma from thefashion-six.blogspot.co.uk nominated me for the Liebster Award! The rules are at the bottom of the post for those of you that I nominate. Here we go:

11 Questions from Emma

1. What are your top three beauty products that you use and repurchase faithfully?  Hmm, I love to try new things, so there are actually very few products that I use for very long. I would say…NARS Blush in Orgasm because it is always flattering and easy to apply, Bobbi Brown Corrector in Light Peach because my undereye circles are terrifying without this product, and Aquaphor Healing Ointment because it is unbeatable as an overnight treatment for baby soft lips..
2. What are your ambitions for the future? I hope to settle into a career that excites me (likely in retail/ fashion), get married at some point, and move around the world. I like New York City, but I’m the type of person who would be excited to live anywhere!
3. Where is your favourite place in the world? On my parents’ front porch in North Carolina. No question about it.
4. What is your favourite clothes shop? Madewell
5. How did you decide on the name of your blog? I can’t exactly remember? I wanted a name that wasn’t going to limit what I could post about and that didn’t sound too much like other blog names. MisforM tends toward a beauty blog at this point, but I wanted it to be open ended, so I went with a play on my name, and I tried not to think too much about it.
6. Give us the link of the blog post your most proud of (I promise i’ll read it!) I’m pretty proud of this post on packing makeup because it was so hard to arrange all those products in a photo!
7. Describe your fashion style: Classic, tailored, and laid-back.
8. What is your most cherished memory? Probably parts of my senior year in high school, when my neighbors were all extremely close, and we were constantly hanging out outside like a huge family. It was such a fun time!
9. What skills do you wish you had? I wish I could sing. I’m not tone deaf, but my vocal quality is terrible (haha, no really, terrible), and I have always admired people who can.
10. Would you rather spend £100 on makeup, skincare products or clothes? Depends on the day, but probably clothes right now, since I’m so excited about new spring clothes coming out.
11. What was your first job? I taught tap dance to 4 year olds when I was in high school haha.

11 Totally Random Facts:

1. I deal with stress by sleeping. No joke. Stressed out? Time for a nap.
2. I majored in Asian Studies (essentially Chinese language), and I have a passion for learning language and communication.
3. There are only three foods I’ve discovered so far in my life that I will refuse to eat: bleu cheese, maraschino cherries, and coconut.
4. I have a three-legged cat named Ranger.
5. I regularly set my alarm a full hour and a half before I have to get up, because I will snooze it for at least an hour completely in my sleep.
6. I look up the ending to movies before I decide if I want to watch them or not, but I never read the end of a book first.
7. I hope this blog helps me develop my design aesthetic.
8. I usually go out with my friends on the weekends, but I also equally love staying in and relaxing.
9. I have a younger sister who is studying to be a veterinarian.
10. In my free time (of which I have very little right now, ha), I enjoy keeping up with my scrapbook.
11. Sea Salt Caramel ice cream is my guilty pleasure of the moment. So. Delicious.

Tag: Blogger Firsts

Tag posts are some of my favorites to read because they give just a little hint into a blogger’s personality! Jessica from Dungarees & Donuts started this Blogger Firsts tag, and after she told me about it on Twitter, I figured I’d give it a go!

The first brand you found out about due to blogging?
Bourjois!  I live in the US, so I hadn’t heard of this at all prior to blogging.  Getting these products isn’t easy Stateside, but it is definitely on my must-buy list next time I get over to Europe.

The first youtube tutorial you watched and attempted?
Probably one of the Pixiwoo tutorials.  They have so many great ones that are super wearable.

The first high end item you bought?
Diorshow mascara! Although it is funny because I swore by it then and absolutely don’t like it now.

The first product you regret buying?
I hate to say it, but the Maybelline Color Elixir lip glosses.  I’m not a lip gloss girl, and I’m not sure why I thought these would make me a lip gloss girl.  They are great glosses, with beautiful colors and a non-sticky formula, I just don’t like glosses! (Review to come!)

The first product you repurchased?
Benefit They’re Real mascara.  I adore this stuff, and while I do love trying new mascaras, nothing has compared to the huge drama that this Benefit offering provides.

The first product you reviewed on your blog?
The Marc Jacobs Style Eye-Con Palette in The Lolita!  (Spoiler: I love it!)

The first product you bought due to a blogger review?
I think it was the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light?  I don’t regret that at all.

Do you still use any of your first blogger make-up purchases?
Oh yes, I still use my Pixi Glow Tonic every day!

I tag Lauren and Hannah! Go!

My Corner of the Internet

Hi!  Welcome to M is for Melissa, the newest beauty & lifestyle blog to hit the internet as of this moment. I have three goals in starting this blog:

  1. To make some sort of use out of my obsession with beauty products.  I’m going to buy them anyway, so maybe someone who has my skin type, or someone who is thinking about buying a product, can benefit from my thoughts on the matter.
  2. To create more.  I am such a creative person, but in the last few years (mostly due to a strenuous 4 years of college, and an utterly uncreative job), I have lost sight of my creative passions, so I hope to cultivate them a bit more here.
  3. To connect with the blogging community.  This is probably the biggest reason I started this blog.  I’ve been reading beauty blogs (mostly blogs based out of the UK, actually) for some time now, and my favorite parts of reading their blogs is seeing how they interact with each other.  There is so much collaboration and support between many of the bloggers I follow, and perhaps, if I am lucky enough (and dedicated enough?), I’ll get to join. So thank you, UK beauty bloggers, for giving me a virtual kick in the butt to start a blog.

My intention at this point is to create a beauty-focused blog with bits of lifestyle and fashion, because those are my favorite types of blogs to read, and in my opinion, you simply cannot have too many of them.  For one, beauty products are constantly released, and most beauty-buyers look to the internet for recommendations and examples of what products look like.  Plus, creativity is boundless when it comes to lifestyle blogs.  Everybody in the world could have a lifestyle blog and each and every one would be interesting and different.

If you’ve found your way here, thank you so much for reading! If you want to learn a little more about me, check out my About page, and leave a comment so I can follow you!
